About mid morning, my Celcom line rang. It was an unfamiliar number.
As a rule, I don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognise. But something about this number called to me.
"Hello", I said.
"Hello Encik Amir", said the voice on the other line.
"Yes...", I said, still unable to place the voice.
"Well I'm from FlyFM and I'm calling to say that your daughter Aishah has won 2 tickets to the premier screening of The Fog. But I need your identity card number as she doesn't have one", said the caller.
I'm like at this point ecstatic that Aishah had won a prize on radio; her father has won numerous prizes on radio. Some of the luck has rubbed off to her!
But the caller went on, this time raving about Aishah.
"Your daughter is SO well-spoken for an 11 year old. She is well-mannered, and has good telephone manners", she went on.
"In fact I'm gonna call her again to chat one day, and also to record what she says and run them as promos!".
Hah!
It may only be tickets to a movie (which she can't watch as she's under-aged). But I'm mighty proud of her.
You see, she had always been shy when it comes to speaking to waiters or shopkeepers. She'd always shy away, when I tell her to ask for extra sauce, or to check on our order at a restaurant.
So her calling the station in itself was a step in the right direction for her. A big step!
Winning was a bonus.
I am proud of her. She's been through so much in her onl 11 years of life. In her own way, she has shown maturity that always envelopes my heart with a warmth only a daughter can give.
The other woman I'm proud to be associated with is Siti Khadijah, my second-born.
Like her elder sister, she has qualities that would make any father proud.
One day, as I was getting dressed to go out with the kids, I overheard this conversation between the 2 Sitis.
"Aishah, do you know that everything we have is made in China?", Khadijah noted, as she was looking at her new La Senza shoes.
"Even the stuff we bought in Perth, the stuff Tok Ma and Tok Pa gives us from there are all made in China!", her little voiced said with some element of surprise.
She obviously expected stuff she buys in Australia to be made in Ozzieland, and the stuff she bought from La Senza to be made is some non-Asian country.
I clarified to her why this was so, and aked her why she was even bothered by it.
"Its just strange that's all", she quipped.
That was last year when she was 8! She is a very observant girl, and is always on the lookout about money.
She'll always ask me if I'm spending too much on say, a pair of jeans for her sister and herself. Concerned about her family's economics at 8.
Siti Aishah and Siti Khadijah, you are my gems. Not because of your special qualities and traits, just by being yourselves.
Yes, I may be astrounded by your intelligence and maturity but you know what?
I don't need those to remind me that you're special. I love theboth of you very much!
NOTE: God is Great. Today a couple of Narnia tickets landed on my desk. So the girls will get to watch the movie themselves. I have to find someone to watch The Fog with me.
